Registration for the 23rd Annual Girls in the Middle Conference Now Open – Bent County Democrat

LA JUNTA — We’re back! After taking time off in 2021 to keep our girls safe during the pandemic, the Girls in the Middle conference is coming back strong for our 23rd year. The annual Girls in the Middle Conference will be held Saturday, March 5 at Otero College from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This year’s conference theme is “Ignite Your Future” and will encourage middle-aged girls to navigate the exciting world of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

The theme will be addressed throughout the day in practical workshops with the collaboration and example of women in STEAM careers. Registration opens for girls in grades 5-8 on January 24 and closes February 17 at 5 p.m. All entries will be taken online at www.girlsinthemiddle.com.

The aim of the conference is to encourage school-aged girls to continue their studies in science, technology and mathematics once they enter high school. In March 2020, 150 girls from 10 area schools, as well as homeschooled students in Southeast Colorado attended the conference to learn about careers that require advanced training in the study of science, technology, engineering, arts or mathematics. Workshops were presented by professional women who are actively working in their careers. This year’s conference is expected to host at least 18 different career workshops that will be taught by women who work in the following fields: web design, archaeologist, athletic trainer, nursing, paramedics, pharmacy, veterinary science and patrol. from Colorado State who will feature in – Mock Accident Scene, Evidence Collection, Port of Entry, Expedition, State Fire and K-9.

The Girls in the Middle committee is made up of an all-volunteer group of professional women from surrounding communities and Otero College. The $5 conference fee for students includes breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. The conference is open to all local girls in grades 5-8.

Registration will close on February 17 at 5 p.m. For more information contact us through our website www.girlsinthmiddle. com and follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/GirlsInTheMiddleAtOJC/.
