Internet panics over stopping that shark plush

It’s not too often that the whole internet can agree on something, so when it does, it’s worth taking note. When the internet heard that the most beloved shark plush of all time, IKEA BLÅHAJ, it looks like it will be discontinued in April 2022.

For those who don’t know, BLÅHAJ has become an internet icon with people who absolutely adore them how sweet and cuddly they are for the memes they have become. Shark pictures do normal activities are massively popular and there are even an entire subreddit dedicated to plush. BLÅHAJ has even become synonymous with LGBTQ + community – especially in transgender people – so much so that IKEA has even used them in official advertisements supporting marriage equality.

Now it looks like BLÅHAJ is on the verge of extinction. A comment from the official IKEA UK Twitter account Support from a customer service representative named Alex claimed that “It may only be available for a short time as it is expected to be discontinued from April 2022.”

As sharks don’t seem to be at risk of stopping In other countries, many believe this trade decision could be due to Brexit – the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union – somehow affecting the shipping and availability of products.

Whatever the cause of the shutdown, the internet was absolutely appalled by the news, sharing its disgust across the web.

And while some have suggested healthier options to save BLÅHAJ…

Others have taken it to serious extremes – jokingly, we hope.

Many expressed how special the shark is to them and showed photos of their stuffed friends in their homes.

Twitter users started using #SaveBlahaj on Twitter and a petition to save BLÅHAJ from extinction already has hundreds of signatures. It will be interesting to see if IKEA responds to this overwhelming call to keep these sharks in their stores. They have not released an official statement on BLÅHAJ interruption at this time.
