Google’s John Mueller doesn’t see SEO getting stale


Google’s John Mueller shares his thoughts on the future of SEO and if he sees it ever becoming obsolete.

During the Google Search Central SEO Hangout recorded on July 2, a question was asked that simply asked, “What is your vision for the future of SEO?” “

This has put Mueller on the spot as he admits he doesn’t have that perfect talk about the future of SEO.

It addresses a common concern shared by those in the SEO industry that machine learning will become so advanced that Google will understand websites without any additional optimization.

If Google’s machine learning algorithms could figure out everything about websites on their own, there would be no need for SEO.

Mueller does not see the future of research in this direction, however. Here is his full answer.

When asked about his vision for the future of SEO, Mueller replies:

“I don’t know. Good question. I don’t have that five minute answer on the future of SEO. I think one of the things people always worry about is all about machine learning. and Google’s algorithms will go so far as to automatically understand every website and SEO will be out of date, no one will need to do that.I don’t think that will happen.

He goes on to make a comparison with the web design industry, noting that today’s CMSs have not made website development obsolete despite their level of advancement.

As CMS become more and more advanced, the web design industry adapts and evolves and looks for new problems to be solved.

“… With all of this new technology, you will have new tools and new ways of looking at your website, which maybe will make it easier for you to create great content, to create clear structures for your website.

Similar to how things have evolved over the last 10-20 years where in the beginning you were writing your own PHP code and creating your own HTML code and it was a lot of work and over time all of those CMS have evolved where virtually anyone can go off and build a website without having to really understand any of these HTML and much like the basics on the server side.

Why make this comparison?

Mueller sees SEO moving in the same direction. It suggests that some of the things we do manually like writing H1 and H2 tags could possibly be handled by the website’s CMS.

The future of SEO that Mueller describes appears to be largely automated by different tools.

It gives an example of uploading the main content of a web page and automatically optimizing the title tags by the CMS.

“And I think the evolution will continue and there will be more and more tools available and you will be able to do more and more things in a way that works well enough for the search engines and it is not. not that SEO work will go far but rather it will evolve.

So maybe instead of manually tweaking the H2 and H1 tags, you’ll delegate that to a CMS that will make sure that the most important content is already included as the title on the page.

Marketers believe Google will make SEO obsolete thanks to advances in machine learning.

Mueller seems to suggest that CMSs will optimize more on their own for search engines.

So where does that leave SEOs? Time will tell what the role of an SEO will look like in the future. Mueller doesn’t see the profession changing any time soon.
