Consultant to be hired for the evaluation of the RR project

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has decided to hire a consultant to carry out a third party assessment of the Rawalpindi Ring Road project, a component of the Economic Corridor.

RDA, the project’s executing agency, has started the process of hiring consultants for the third-party evaluation. The consultant will make recommendations regarding the modification of the project and the change of alignment for the economic corridor. The final decision on modifications will be made by the competent authority and the planning commission.

It should be noted that the RDA, acting under Section 59E of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules, could only award contracts to state-supported construction companies.

Subsequently, RDA awarded the project contract to Frontier Works Organization (FWO) for Rs 22.80 billion. As part of the project, a 38.8 km route between GT Road Banth and Thalian Motorway Interchange is to be completed by the contractor in two years.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan had previously laid the official foundation stone for the project. The Rawalpindi Ring Road, which was named N5, was extended from 38.8 km to 64 km under the previous government.

However, this project was stopped by the previous government after the revelation of an alleged corruption scandal. After the arrests in the anti-corruption case, Commissioner Rawalpindi Capt (Retd) Muhammad Mehmood and land acquisition collector Waseem Tabish and others were acquitted in court as the charges could not be proven .

Sources say that now, due to the third-party assessment of the project, not only will the project become part of the economic corridor, but its route may also be changed and its length increased.
