CONFIRMED: Everton sign Robin Olsen on loan from Roma

Everton have announced the signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen on a season-long loan. He becomes the sixth player the Toffees have signed this summer, following Niels Nkounkou, Allan, James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ben Godfrey.

The 30-year-old veteran joined AS Roma in the summer of 2018 from FC Copenhagen and is currently the starting goalkeeper for the Sweden international team with 37 caps. He has since fallen down the pecking order in Rome with journeyman Antonio Mirante usurping him and Spaniard Pau Lopez also in the mix. Olsen was loaned out to Cagliari last season where he played twenty times. In all, he has played 44 Serie A games, conceding 66 times with 8 clean sheets at both clubs.

The Toffees were previously linked with approaches for Sergio Romero and then Claudio Gazzaniga, but Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur demanded outright sales and no loan deal that would have improved a rival.

Current starter Jordan Pickford has been increasingly in the limelight since last season after making a number of high-profile blunders on the pitch. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has backed his keeper in public on several occasions, but this approach shows his lack of confidence in substitutes Jonas Lossl and Joao Virginia to challenge the England No.1.

Olsen v Pickford, last two seasons

It will be interesting to see now if the club pursues an exit for Lossl and/or Virginia, with the domestic transfer window for EFL clubs still open until October 16. Stay tuned for more.
